Safety Tips

If you’re new to skiing or snowboarding, consider taking a lesson. Our Snow Sports School would be glad to help you, and you’ll learn more in an hour with one of our instructors than you will in a day alone!
Use well maintained ski/snowboard equipment. Maintain your gear, including keeping your bindings clean and functional. Our Rental Department would be happy to help you with the latest gear to get you out on the mountain.
Carry a ski area map (available at the ticket office) and any needed medications such as your inhaler or insulin
Take frequent breaks
Stay dry and pack extra clothes
Dress properly in layers – cotton is not a good material for winter, as moisture can increase heat loss. Wool socks work best to keep your feet warm
Mittens, snug at the wrist, are better than gloves
Protect your eyes with goggles and put on a hat—or, better yet, a helmet. You lose most of your body heat through your head
Know the symptoms of cold stress; reddening skin, tingling, pain, swelling, leg cramps, numbness, and blisters

Big Powderhorn Backpack Policy:

At Big Powderhorn Mountain Resort, all guests MUST REMOVE backpacks before loading chairlifts. This rule will be strictly enforced, and we ask you please remove and carry your backpack on your lap while riding the chairlift. The use of child-carrier backpack devices is also STRICTLY PROHIBITED.

Trail Signs

Lifts and trails at Big Powderhorn are marked on trail maps, available at the ticket window and around the hill. The symbols shown for each trail indicate the difficulty of the trail.

Green Circle: Easier
Blue Square: More Difficult
Black Diamond: Most Difficult

Big Powderhorn Mountain Resort considers on a case by case basis the use of other equipment for disability access including but not necessarily limited to monoskis, biskis, outriggers, sitskis, and other equipment that is pre-approved by Big Powderhorn management and recognized for disability access when needed for access by persons with disabilities on a case by case basis, based on an objective evaluation of whether use of the equipment is needed for access, and whether allowing use of the equipment poses safety concerns or would require fundamental alteration of the ski area’s operations including our ability to evacuate the equipment and guest from a disabled chairlift. Please contact us in advance to discuss use of special equipment.
